Puerto
Escondido Costa Rica (Start date is August 2. The
length of the camp is two weeks)
Puerto Escondido is located on the southern
end of the Mexican Riviera and truly is a ‘Hidden Port’. About four hours
south by car from Acapulco, not very many tourists make it down to this
small fishing pueblo. Those that do are in for a treat. With more than 300
days of sunshine, world class fishing and surfing, abundant natural
settings with plentiful wildlife and crystal clear blue waters, it is a
wonder more people don’t flock to its seven different beaches.
Many of the tourists that do make their way to Puerto Escondido are coming for the surf. The ‘Mexican Pipeline’ as Playa Zicatela is called is considered by many to be the best surf beach in Mexico, if not North America. This ten mile long, white sand beach is home to a number of surfing competitions including the World Masters Championship in August. There are a number of different breaks along this expansive shoreline, perfect for surfers of all levels of ability. For those visitors not interested in surfing there is still a great deal to do. There are six other beaches to explore, with plenty of opportunities to swim, snorkel, boat, fish and scuba dive. Playa Principal is the main beach in front of town and has a pedestrian only boardwalk, lined with shops, hotels and restaurants. Further north and west on the other side of the lighthouse in a secluded cove is Playa Manzanillo. This is probably the best beach for swimming and snorkeling. Inland and south of the city are rainforest and wetlands. This area has a great deal of biodiversity. In the lagoons, inlets and river mouths you will find dozens of different bird species, crocodiles, iguanas and endangered sea turtles. Just east of town is the Mixtec Archaeological Site, with 10 pyramids, numerous stone carvings and ruins. While not yet open to the public it exemplifies the fact that native peoples have inhabited this region for thousands of years. The Culture of the area is strong and deep and the pace of life is very tranquil. The combination of sun and sand has created the perfect atmosphere for both visitors and locals alike. This hidden port certainly lives up to its name and we hope that it does for a little while longer. Click here for the Teen Study Spanish & Surf Puerto Escondido Itinerary ...
