Surfing in Spain & San Sebastian! Spain is a centre for surfing in mainland Europe. Surfers from all around the world test the waves, especially in the Pais Vasco area where San Sebastian lies. There are three main beach breaks at San Sebastian. Playa La Conche is the famous city beach that San Sebastian surrounds. Its is a great surf spot for beginners. It's a right hand beach break that is ideal in a southerly with a north west swell. You are right in the middle of the city ... only a few minutes from the school. Playa Ondaratte is a left hand beach break, with nice waves for beginners to learn on. Playa La Zurriola is a regional classic not to miss. La Zurriola is for all levels, from beginner to advanced because on any given day, you'll have 3 or 4 metre waves on the one side of the beach, 2 metres in the centre, and comfortable 1 metre waves for beginners along the other side. It has a great longboard wave, totally unpredictable day to day conditions. Extreme swell can come late September early October when sea is still warm. 20 minutes away are three more beach breaks at Zaraurz and ... only about 35 km (22 miles away Biarritz, Deba, Fuenterrabia, and Hendaie. On the French side you have the big beaches of Biarritz and Hendaia, and on the Spanish side Deba and Fuenterrabia. There is always action to be had near San Sebastian!
